October 2026 Social Security, SSI and SSDI Payment Dates: Official U.S. Schedule and Late-Payment Steps
October 2026 Social Security, SSI and SSDI Payment Dates: Official U.S. Schedule and Late-Payment Steps
The official October 2026 payment calendar is already published by the Social Security Administration (SSA). For most people, the key dates are October 1 for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), October 2 for Social Security recipients whose normal date is the 3rd, and October 14, 21, or 28 for Social Security benefits scheduled by birth date. There is also an SSI payment on October 30, but that payment is for November because November 1 falls on a Sunday.
This distinction matters because a calendar can make it look as though some SSI recipients receive two October benefits. They do not. The October 30 payment is simply November's SSI payment delivered early under SSA's weekend rule.
An October 2026 calendar can show several federal benefit payment dates, but the correct date depends on the benefit type and, for many Social Security recipients, the beneficiary's assigned birth-date group.

Common misconception: SSDI does not have a separate monthly calendar
Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, is a Social Security benefit. Once monthly SSDI benefits are in pay status, the regular Social Security payment-day rules apply. That means many SSDI recipients are paid on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday according to the assigned birth-date group, while certain exceptions are paid on the 3rd-of-the-month schedule.
SSA explains that SSDI benefits are paid in the month after the month for which they are due. For example, a benefit due for one month is ordinarily paid in the following month. The agency's SSDI guidance is available at Disability Benefits: You're Approved.
What to do: If you receive SSDI, do not look for a separate “SSDI-only October calendar.” Check the Social Security payment schedule and your assigned payment day in your personal record.
Who receives Social Security on October 2 instead of October 3?
SSA says Social Security is generally paid on the 3rd of the month if you were receiving or had applied for Social Security benefits on or before April 30, 1997, or if you receive both Social Security and SSI. In October 2026, the 3rd is a Saturday. SSA's rule is to pay the business day before when the regular payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal public holiday.
What to do: If your normal Social Security date is the 3rd, check your account on Friday, October 2, rather than waiting until Monday.
How the birth-date schedule works in October 2026
For people assigned to the post-April-1997 Wednesday schedule, SSA uses the birth date of the person on whose earnings record the benefit is paid:
Birth date 1st through 10th: second Wednesday, which is October 14 in 2026.
Birth date 11th through 20th: third Wednesday, October 21.
Birth date 21st through 31st: fourth Wednesday, October 28.
SSA regulations also make clear that the assigned payment day is tied to the insured person's earnings record and has defined exceptions. The current regulation is available at 20 CFR § 404.1807.
What to do: Use the birth date tied to the earnings record under which the benefit is paid, not automatically the birth date of the person checking the bank account.
Why October 30 appears on the SSI calendar
SSI is normally paid on the first day of the month for which it is due. When the first falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, SSA pays on the preceding day that is not a weekend or legal holiday. In 2026, November 1 is a Sunday, so the November SSI payment is scheduled for Friday, October 30.
What to do: If you receive SSI on both October 1 and October 30, budget the October 30 deposit as your November payment. It is not an extra October benefit.
Does the October federal holiday change the schedule?
The federal holiday in October 2026 is Columbus Day on Monday, October 12. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management lists it in the official 2026 federal holiday schedule. None of the standard October Wednesday Social Security dates falls on that holiday, so the October 14, 21, and 28 payment dates remain unchanged.
What to do: Do not assume that every bank holiday moves every Social Security payment. A shift occurs when your scheduled payment date itself falls on a weekend or qualifying legal holiday.
Payment date versus bank posting time: what is actually official?
Another common misunderstanding is to treat an internal “processing date” as though SSA publishes it for each recipient. SSA publishes the scheduled payment date. It does not publish a recipient-specific ACH processing timestamp that tells you exactly when your bank will display the funds.
For an electronic payment, SSA's practical instruction is straightforward: if the payment is not in your account on the scheduled pay date, contact your bank or financial institution first because it may be experiencing a delay in posting the payment. SSA gives this instruction in How do I report a missing payment?.
This means the official SSA date and the moment a bank's app updates are related but not identical concepts. Some institutions may display incoming funds differently, but SSA does not publish or guarantee a universal hour-of-day posting time.
What to do: Treat the official SSA date as the date the payment is expected. If it is not visible, check with the financial institution before assuming SSA failed to send it.
What to check if your October 2026 payment is late
Confirm the correct scheduled date. Check whether you are SSI-only, Social Security-only, concurrent Social Security and SSI, or on the birth-date Wednesday schedule.
Check whether the date moved because of a weekend or holiday. In October 2026, the 3rd-of-the-month payment moves to October 2. The November SSI payment moves to October 30.
Check your bank or financial institution first for electronic payments. SSA specifically says a posting delay may occur at the financial institution.
Review your personal benefit information. SSA provides payment history and upcoming payment information through a personal my Social Security account. The agency's official entry point is View benefit payment schedule.
If the payment is still missing, contact SSA. SSA's missing-payment FAQ instructs beneficiaries to call 1-800-772-1213, use TTY 1-800-325-0778 if applicable, or contact a local Social Security office after checking with the financial institution.
What about mailed checks?
SSA's 2026 payment calendar includes a note telling people who do not receive a payment on the expected date to allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security. That note is most relevant where physical mail delivery is involved.
Electronic-payment guidance is more immediate: if the electronic payment is absent on the scheduled date, SSA says to contact the bank or financial institution first.
What to do: Use the troubleshooting rule that matches how you receive benefits. Do not apply the “three mailing days” wording to a direct-deposit posting problem without first checking the bank.
Verified, conditional and not officially published
Verified: The October 2026 dates of October 1, October 2, October 14, October 21, October 28, and October 30 appear in SSA's official 2026 payment calendar. October 30 is the early November SSI payment, not an additional October SSI entitlement.
Conditional: Your correct Social Security date depends on your assigned payment group, including whether you are in the 3rd-of-the-month exception or a birth-date Wednesday group. Your bank's visible posting time can also vary.
Not officially published: SSA does not publish a universal, recipient-level “processing hour” or promise that every bank will display a deposit at the same time of day. This article therefore does not estimate one.
Official sources and verification date
This schedule was checked on September 29, 2026, using current U.S. government sources only: the Social Security Administration's 2026 payment calendar, SSA benefit-payment FAQs and regulations, and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's 2026 federal holiday schedule. No unpublished dates were estimated.
