NYC Public School Holidays in October 2026: Closure Date and Return Day

New York City Public Schools has one citywide October closure in its 2026–27 calendar: Monday, October 12, for Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Friday, October 9 is the last scheduled school day before the closure, and students return Tuesday, October 13. The calendar shows no multi-day October recess and no October-wide professional-development day. Families should still confirm school-specific training and schedule notices before arranging care.

NYCPS published its 2026–27 calendar on April 21, 2026. It applies to NYCPS schools from 3-K through grade 12. The controlling entries are on the official NYCPS 2026–27 school-year calendar and its printable calendar PDF. The information here was checked against official sources on September 29, 2026.

October 12 creates a three-day weekend, not an October school break. If a student attends on Friday, October 9, the next scheduled day is Tuesday, October 13. The city calendar does not identify October 9 as an early dismissal or October 13 as a late start. Regular school start and dismissal times remain in effect unless the school sends a separate notice.

What the October 12 holiday means

NYCPS names the closure “Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples’ Day.” The wording matters when families search: a city notice may use “Indigenous Peoples’ Day,” while the school calendar includes both Italian Heritage and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The New York State Department of Financial Services lists October 12 as “Columbus Day/Indigenous People’s Day” among 2026 legal holiday observances on which banks may be closed. New York City’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection separately lists Indigenous Peoples Day on October 12 as a city-agency closure.

For school attendance, the answer is straightforward: NYCPS schools are closed Monday, October 12. The holiday already falls on Monday; the school calendar does not show a substitute weekday or an additional closure. The bank-holiday listing is context, but it does not establish the hours of every bank, business, after-school provider, or community organization. Confirm with those organizations if you need service or childcare that day.

October 12 is the only October public-holiday closure named on the NYCPS 2026–27 calendar. It does not list a separate October fall recess, another Columbus Day closure date, or a Halloween school holiday. Halloween is Saturday, October 31, in 2026, so it is already a weekend date. The citywide calendar also lists no October parent-teacher conference day, although individual school conference schedules can differ.

Local exceptions: which calendar should you use?

NYCPS district schools

The citywide calendar is the baseline for non-charter NYC public schools. NYCPS says schools may request minor, school-specific calendar changes through a formal School-Based Option (SBO) process. Approved variations are communicated to families in advance, and schools still have to meet instructional-day requirements. A school notice can therefore matter even when the citywide calendar lists October 12 as the only closure.

Ask your school whether it has scheduled a staff-training or professional-development day, an approved school-based calendar adjustment, a special program schedule, or an October parent meeting that affects attendance or dismissal. The official October grid does not identify a citywide training day. Do not assume students are off simply because staff have a meeting: look for explicit wording that students do not attend, learn remotely, or are dismissed early. This is especially useful when planning a caregiver’s work schedule, transportation, or after-school pickup.

Charter, private, parochial, and early-childhood programs

NYCPS says its city calendar is not the calendar to use for charter schools, private or parochial schools, NYC Early Education Centers (NYCEECs), or Family Childcare Programs. Charter schools follow their own calendars, and early-childhood and childcare schedules can vary by provider. If your child attends one of these programs, request its October 2026 calendar rather than relying on the district-wide October 12 date. The provider may align with NYCPS, but the public-school calendar does not guarantee that it will.

What families should confirm before planning

  • Check the NYCPS calendar: confirm October 12 remains the citywide closure and review any later update.
  • Ask about school training days: confirm whether students attend on any school-specific staff-training or professional-development date in October, and whether the day has a modified schedule.
  • Confirm October 9 and 13 logistics: check dismissal on Friday and arrival time on Tuesday if your school has sent a local schedule notice.
  • Check childcare and meal arrangements separately: after-school programs, community providers, and meal sites may set their own holiday hours. The school calendar does not establish those schedules.
  • Use the right calendar: charter, private, parochial, NYCEEC, and Family Childcare families should confirm dates with their provider.

NYCPS notes that severe weather or another emergency can change a school day; when buildings close, schools may sometimes be in session remotely. A later emergency announcement or school-specific update can also affect plans. For a routine October schedule, however, the verified citywide dates are Friday, October 9 as the last scheduled day before the closure, Monday, October 12 as the holiday, and Tuesday, October 13 as the return to class.
